  • The Giveter way
    an autobiography by monsieur Giveter

    Chapter 1: Who’s joy?

Hey beautiful! I am Giveter, wanna chat a bit over a coffee?? Ok.. not sure! Let me tell you… I have a great story to tell :)

Okie.. so now that the cappuccinos are ordered, lets start off...

My biggest fear in life was gifting; I have lost so much more than I thought I ever would.. just because I gave what I really liked, and not what they would really love… well, yes there were many! ;-)

Once, I gifted my closest-of-all girlfriends the latest Hopkins pressure cooker, which was a total rave then and, we split up. She didn’t even say she was done with my (to-her) boring gifts and (not-to me) lame attempts at romance. She taught me the most important gifting, ok let me correct myself, Giveting lesson of my life – Give what they would appreciate the most!

Being 5 years since, I have started to understand the psyche of the human mind… and I must add, I have had far too many experiences to announce here. And now, all that I do is log on to websites and rummage through their whole catalog hoping I can find something quick to order and ship off to the destination. Invariably like every time, this time too I was just left staring at the screen looking to understand what would be or NOT a good choice for my new office colleague, especially as I am interested in getting to hang out with her more post this gift ;-)

Choosing a gift is a daunting task and I, for one, do not enjoy being put down after all the effort. I want to be right, and appreciated! Hell yeah! Why not?

After my year long efforts with the giving business, now I have build a great gift repository, be it a fragrance for your lover or a beautiful watch for your mom, and I thought .. why not share this piece of info…. gain some brownie points. I bet you are still struggling there… finding the right gift. Am I right?

A quirky coffee mug or a stylish helmet may be 'cool' gifts, but what if you paid for a connoisseur's class on coffee-making or a quad biking experience for a biker friend? In a world of abundance, a lesson on the value of things would be a far better present than a thing of value, says Purvaja Sawant. Your best friend's birthday is coming up and you are clueless about what to buy this time. You have exhausted all the options in the years gone by. What can be new? Ditch the boring perfumewatch-and-designer-bag routine; instead, present your loved ones with an experience they will cherish for years. We all have wardrobes brimming with discarded gifts accumulated over the years - from flower vases, trinkets, bags to chinaware. These traditional gifts occupy space, and a lot of times, we repackage them and pass them along, or hoard it for years without using them. But what if you loved wine and received a wine-tasting session offer? Or you are a bike enthusiast, and have been presented with a chance to go quad biking? Called 'experiential presents' this new idea has given the traditional concept of gifting, a heart-warming makeover.

If you often get confused about getting a suitable gift for a loved one, here's one website that can shoo away your woes. Giveter.com, a one-stop shop for gifting solutions, has a new feature that fetches the best options for your friend or relative using their Facebook profile. The special addition by Giveter is called 'N-Lighter'. Using popular social networking website Facebook, Giveter, with prior permission from the user, analyses the profile of the person to whom the gift needs to be given to. Giveter then scans the concerned person's likes and traits to judge and present ideal gifting options. Explaining the concept further, Mayank Bhangadia, one of Giveter's founders, told IANS: "If someone is gifting her brother, who has shown interest for calligraphy on Facebook, she may be recommended a calligraphy gift set or a book from Flipkart on this subject to improve his calligraphy skills." Giveter was established in 2012 by Bhangadia and Avinash Saxena, both alumni of the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Their common vision to make gifting thoughtful and full of fun led to the launch of Giveter.com, which has since its inception, grown strength by strength. Presently, the website has tie-ups with over 50 brands and portals like Flipkart, Lenskart, Ferns N Petals, Caratlane, Happily Unmarried and Zansaar, providing its patrons thousands of gifting items. Saxena said: "We started Giveter to solve a big problem that we often faced ourselves, 'What is the best gift for a particular person?'. People really want to be thoughtful in finding the perfect gifts for their loved ones and we wanted to be their companion in this process." They have a team of 'gift gurus', who keep track of unique products across the Indian e-commerce portals and handpick interesting options.

    MID DAY
Giving people’s gifts needn’t be one long knuckle-biting exercise anymore. Giveter, a new s-commerce website launched in August 2012, finds out the recipient’s interests on Facebook and suggests how that fits best with the mood, occasion and budget. How it works: Giveter’s co-founders, Mayank Bangadia and Avinash Saxena are one of the millions out there in some ways - just before a party or a special occasion, they’d always struggle to come up with a good gift. But then, they stand out in the way that matters. The duo found the solution to thoughtful gifting in s-commerce and founded Giveter, an s-commerce website, to help people gift better. On Giveter, you’re first required to fill in the age group of the recipient, your relationship with him/her, the occasion, the mood of the gift (funky, romantic, personalised, precious), the personality of the recipient (book lover, creative, fun-loving, health freak, takes it easy, sporty, traveller, music lover, homely, religious and so on) and the budget of the gift. Based on these inputs, the website throws up multiple, precise options. For an even more insightful gift, Giveter has the N’lighter option, which asks you to sign up through your Facebook account and then determines the recipient’s likes and dislikes through their Facebook activity (the recipient must be your friend on Facebook). It then comes up with relevant gift suggestions. “Everything, including gifting, has gone online, but, unlike eating and shopping, there was no way you could get advice on your choice, involve friends, or know just what the recipient would love. Offline, we rarely shop for gifts alone - so why do it all by yourself online?” says Bangadia, over the telephone from Gurgaon. Till recently, say the founders, social commerce in India just meant companies putting up their products on social media to get Likes, Shares and Comments. There was no real interaction that the customers could have among themselves about what they were buying. “S-commerce makes it easy for you to determine what the recipient wants. For instance, one of our customer used N’lighter to find a gift for her brother. It turned out that he loved cycling (a fact she didn’t know), because it showed up in his Facebook activity and she gifted him a cycling helmet. She wouldn’t have imagined buying him a helmet otherwise,” smiles Saxena. N’lighter also keeps a track of how long ago the recipient Liked a certain activity or product because interests could get dated, too. It makes one wonder whether it is safe to allow an s-commerce website such close access into a social media account. Bangadia, however, says that Giveter makes terms of access clear right from the time a user signs up, and does not back-up data. “We want to be very careful about not going viral in the name of s-commerce. We do not announce who has bought what from Giveter, and strive to value user privacy. Every new company instinctively wants to go viral and announce their sales, but we don’t plan on doing that,” says Bangadia.

The start-up is also betting big on the social media, which fuels its popularity. Currently, the business, with 10 employees, is generating a daily revenue of Rs 1 lakh.

Facebook has also come as a boon for gifting sites. Giveter.com, an e-commerce portal that offers gifting recommendations based on gender, age and relationship, provides users with the option of linking their Facebook accounts to access the profile of the person they want to buy a gift for. Once linked, Giveter suggests gifts based on Facebook activity. Mayank Bhangadia, co-founder of Giveter, explains, “If I want to gift my wife something for her birthday, I log on to Giveter with my Facebook account and type in the name. Giveter then scans her Facebook page. If she has ‘liked’ Harry Potter on Facebook, it may recommend a book in the same genre, such as Lord of the Rings, or any other fantasy literature.”

Gurgaon: Most of us are familiar with the dilemma in choosing a perfect gift for our dear ones and two Gurgaon-based techies seem to have hit upon a solution to this predicament. Faced with similar situations, they have created a website which recommends gifts based on the recipient's age, relationship with the one who is gifting, occasion and personality, among other things. "What we do is something unique; we bring information from social networking sites to the buying sites like Facebook. So once you log in via your Facebook account, on our website (Giveter), you can select a recipient from your contact list. It will then automatically establish the age and relationship, track hobbies and likes to determine the area of interests of that contact and find a suitable gift. For instance, if your friend has liked Sachin Tendulkar's page on Facebook, the website will suggest a Sachin Tendulkar clock for your friend," say Mayank Bhangodia and Avinash Saxena, both IIT-Delhi graduates.

Loved by few and feared by many, the task of purchasing the right gifts has now become easy with giveter.com. An out-ofthe-box concept, the website has relevant filters to zero down the appropriate gifts. It has made your job easier with their unique application, which looks at interests and likes of your friends on Facebook, and then recommends relevant products that you can gift them. The focus at giveter is finding the perfect gift for the user. Promoted by Mayank Bhangadia, an IIT Delhi graduate and Avinash Saxena who has worked with Zomato, the website only showcases gifts cherry-picked by their in-house experts, relevant for different occassions. They recently launched the 'giveter calendar' reminds you about the upcoming birthdays and anniversaries two weeks in advance. Available at Giveter.com
    Yourstory.in
It’s been almost 6 months since Giveter was launched (complete story) and the team has come to know quite a few things in the ‘gifting domain’. At it’s core, Giveter makes the process of gifting easier and saves you the hassle of picking and choosing (which is being attempted by a few other startups as well). As of now, Giveter is serving around a 100,000 gifters per month according to founder Avinasha Saxena. Their partner count has also gone upto 25 with websites like Engrave.in, Roomstory.com joining in and talks are on with the biggies in the space like Jabong and Flipkart. Adding a feature to their repertoire, Giveter has launched it’s Calendar feature. Taking in information about your ‘relationship status’ and wall feed from Facebook, the feature will remind people about upcoming occasions. But many already do this one would ask. “We believe there’s a bigger issue,” says Avinash. “There are a few services (including Facebook) that reminds birthdays of friends, but on the birthday itself. Further, out of 700 odd friends that I have on Facebook, only 5-10 are close enough to send gifts to. So there was a need of some kind of reminder service where I can store important occasions(birthdays, anniversary) of few selected close friends and family members,” he adds. Give it a spin here. The human touch: In early June 2012, when they started, the Giveter team saw everything in terms of numbers, markets, etc. “We thought we were opening a new, mostly untapped, sales channel for e-com websites. But as we moved on, people started calling us, as if we were their friends,” shares Avinash and goes on to describe an incident: “There was a guy who called us to discuss what gift can he give to a not-just-friend, and we started shortlisting potential products for him and then in the process of discussing he became so friendly that he started telling us more, actually he was planning to propose his friend. Him, and us, are all awaiting for the result. At another instance, we were helping a lady to find a gift to say sorry to her husband for a fierce fight they had the other night.” These examples are not something that’ll change the world or flip it over but the sheer joy of running a business. This is what keep a startup founder going and the reason why he or she is ready to sacrifice so much. So, go startup!
